Sophia (called "Maria") was born in Eldena, Mecklenburg-Schwerin where generations of her family are documented in the Eldena Parish. Born on July 20, 1808 she was baptized on July 24 and later confirmed in 1823.The Eldena Lutheran Church is an impressive structure with a long history dating to the year 1230.

Sophia was a widow when she arrived in America in 1867. The group -- Sophia, daughter Mary, grandson Carl, daughter Elizabeth plus Elizabeth's future husband Carl Schroeder -- boarded the steamship "Hammonia II" in Hamburg, Germany on April 27, 1868 and departed on April 28. They arrived at the Port of New York in the early morning hours of Sunday, May 12. Captain Ehlers signed the ship's manifest on May 13; 786 passengers had been aboard. Except for Carl Schroeder, they sailed under the surname "Drechsler," the married surname of the twice-widowed matriarch, Sophia (Schütt) (Drahn) Drechsler.

Sophia died only 16 months after her arrival in Clayton County and is buried in an unmarked grave on the Henry* and Mary* (Drahn) Johanningmeier plot in the Garnavillo Cemetery, Garnavillo, Clayton County, Iowa (aka "the old town cemetery").

*Maria Elizabeth Carolina Wilhelmine "Mary" (Drahn) Johanningmeier, 1836-1911

Sophia had six Drahn children. A son born in 1834, died in Germany in 1836, and a daughter born in 1839 died in Germany in 1844. Of the two adult daughters and two adult sons who emigrated to America, the sons, "Henry" and "Fred," were the nucleus of the Drahns in Iowa where the surname is perpetuated -- and, now, beyond.
