Gloria Rae Barkley was born May 1, 1929 in Sioux City, Iowa, the long-awaited daughter of Louis Roy and Martha Mable McIntyre. While a journalism student at the University of South Dakota, Vermilion, Gloria met the love of her life, John Barkley. They were married on the day of John’s graduation, May 29, 1950. In the early years of their marriage, they made their home in Bloomington, Minnesota where Gloria was a devoted wife and mother to their three children. When John was called to serve the Lord as an Episcopal minister, Gloria graciously served by his side. John’s retirement in 1992 brought them to Kimball where they celebrated 58 years of marriage before his death in 2007. Gloria had a passion to serve others, and lived this out through her church and the Kimball Senior Fellowship Center. Gloria valued the friendships she made there. Those who loved her knew that she never missed an opportunity to send a card or write a personal note.
This beautiful woman was loved by many and will be greatly missed by her daughters, Cheryl (Jerry) Merrihew of Ashby and Alison (Jean) Davis of North Platte; son Brad (Domani) Barkley of Northglenn, Colorado; seven grandchildren, their spouses and 13 great-grandchildren; as well as her many friends.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Kimball County Manor for their care and kindness in her final months.
