Bob was studying airplane mechanics at the Eugene Vocational School before joining the Army Air Corps. In October 1943, Bob enlisted at Fort Lewis, Washington, and was sent to Kelly Field in San Antonio, Texas, and then onto New Jersey for shipment to England. He repaired airplanes in England; and after D Day (6 June 1944), served in Luxenburg, France and Germany. Merle and Bob exchanged letters while he was overseas, and became engaged by mail.
A retired custodian for the Portland Public Schools, Bob Brown has lived most of his life in Oregon. He attended Medford H.S. He was sent to England where he repaired airplanes, and after D Day to Luxenburg, France and Germany. After their marriage, Bob and Merle lived briefly at Vanport, Oregon, until they purchased an old house at 3615 SE 64th in Portland. For a time Bob worked as a transformer repairman at Westinghouse before moving to Tacoma in 1949, where he was a civilian service mechanic for MATS US Air Force. In 1953, Bob, Merle, John and Dianna (son and daughter) returned to Portland and their house on 64th. Bob worked at various jobs, e.g., on a surveying crew for the Bureau of Roads, until he secured a job as a custodian for the Portland Public Schools where he worked from 1953 until 1983 when he retired.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 25, 2006 in Rose City Church of the Nazarene for Robert V Brown, who died May 15 at age 80.
Mr Brown was born July 3, 1925 in Hillsboro and was raised in Medford. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps in Europe. He moved in 1946 to Portland and was a custodian for Portland Public Schools for 30 years, retiring after more then 15 years from Atkinson Elementary School. In 1946, he married Merle Lyle Stephens; she died in 1979. He married Mary Jane Simons in 1980.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, daughter, stepdaughter, stepson, nine grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
