Patrolman Hirsch was the third Nassau County Police Officer killed in the line of duty. He was shot to death by Francis " Two Gun " Crowley in Merrick, N.Y
Despite his fatal wounds, Officer Hirsch managed to shoot at Crowley to stop him without success.
Patrolman Fred Hirsch was awarded the Calderone Medal posthumously September 10th, 1932.
