With her devoted husband of nearly fifty years by her side, Mrs. Vernell T. Calhoun, age 81, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 9, 2016.

Vernell's life began in Nash County November 1, 1934, one of five children born to Dan and Sue Davis Thornell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers: Millard, Dan, and Herman Thornell.

She was loved completely and unconditionally by her husband, Billy D. Calhoun; sister, Carolyn Landing (Dick) of Elm City; and was especially close to her double first cousins, Linda Vick (Donnie) of Bailey, and Faye Bone (Royce) of Nashville.

Her kindness and compassion will also be remembered and missed by several special nieces and nephews.

Vernell's family and friends will gather to celebrate her wonderful life with a Graveside Tribute at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 13, 2016, Rocky Mount Memorial Park, 4454 Dortches Blvd., Rocky Mount, NC.

Please feel free to visit the family immediately following the service and other times at the home.

Just as she lived her life, Vernell wanted her death to be an opportunity in which others might be helped where needed. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions to the charity of your choice.
