NEW BEDFORD -- Eleanor M. (Chace) Washburn, 83, of North Dartmouth died Friday, March 11, 2005, at St. Luke's Hospital. She was the widow of Glenn R. Washburn.

Born in Dartmouth, she was the daughter of the late Henry Andrews Chace and Marjorie (Smith) Chace. She was a lifelong area resident.

A member of the North Baptist Church of New Bedford, she was active in many church organizations. She was a former deacon and a member of the choir.

She taught school in Fairhaven for 20 years and in New Bedford for 23 years.

Mrs. Washburn graduated from North Adams Teachers College and Bridgewater College, earning bachelor's and master's degrees.

She was a member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association and the Retired National Teachers Association.

She is survived by five nieces, Faith McLaughlin of North Dartmouth, Ann McGrae of Florida, and Ruth Botelho, Beth Shea and Jane Merhej; two nephews, Andrew McLaughlin of Michigan and James Harrison of Maryland.

She was a sister of the late Thelma McLaughlin.

Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Wilson Chapel, 479 County St. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery.
