Charles Ambrose Taylor, Jr. was the son of Charles Ambrose Taylor, Sr. and his wife, Alice Arcena McWhirter who was the daughter of Andrew Jackson McWhirter and Nancy Jane Whitehead McWhirter. Charles, Sr. was the son of William Ambrose Taylor and his wife, Artemisia Adeline Duncan Taylor. William Ambrose Taylor was the son of William M. Taylor. Charles Ambrose Taylor, Jr. never married. He enlisted in the US Army during World War II on December 21, 1943, at Camp Shelby for the duration of the war or other emergency, plus six months, subject to the discretion of the President or otherwise according to law. At his enlistment, he was shown as single with dependents, was living in Monroe County, Mississippi and had four years of high School. He was sent to Hawaii and shortly after leaving Hawaii for the USA during 1945, the plane Charles was in, went down in the Pacific Ocean during World War II with seven more men on board. All of the men survived the crash and tied themselves together so they could survive together. The other 6 were large robust men, and Charles was frail, and small. The cold water got to Charles and he became very sick. He was pulling the others down deeper into the water. He requested that they cut him (Charles) loose so they could survive because he knew he was dying. He did indeed die and was buried at sea. (The Lord gives us dying grace as well as living grace). Many hours passed before they were rescued. One of the survivors went to Aberdeen, MS and told his parents about the ordeal.
Thanks to Louise Hanson for the family information. She added the following: No greater love has a man who will give his life for the brethren, as Christ did. The Lord was with him, something one should desire.
The date and information about his enlistment was taken from the US Army Enlistment Records.(GMT)
