James Hugh Utterback, 75, of Scottdale, died Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2016, in UPMC Shadyside, surrounded by his loving family. Jim was born July 25, 1941, in Connellsville, a son of the late Robert N. and Myrtle Miller Utterback. He was a member of Mt. Joy Church of the Brethren, Mt. Pleasant. Jim was a graduate of Scottdale High School Class of 1959. He was a retired Millwright at U.S. Steel, Clairton Works, with 33 years of service. He was a proud Air Force veteran, having served from 1959 to 1965 during the Vietnam War, as a special weapons maintenance tech with the 2855th ABWG (AFLC), attaining the rank of A1C- E-4. He was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal and the Air Force Longevity Service Award. Jim was an active member of the Scottdale American Legion Post No. 240, where he was the former post commander. He was a vital part of the Southmoreland Veterans Association, of which he was a founding member and coordinated many military funerals as part of the Honor Guard and Firing Squad. Jim is gone from our lives, but will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him: his children, Homer A. Utterback, of Uniontown, and Linda Dickson and husband, Rob, of New Alexandria; his grandchildren, James McNally and wife, Pamela, of Jeannette, Elizabeth McNally, of Claridge, David McNally, of Greensburg, Stephanie Dickson, of Saltsburg, Christina, Rebecca and Nathaniel Dickson, all of New Alexandria, Khoury Utterback, of Mt. Pleasant; and his great-grandchildren, Jace and Taylor McNally, Alaina and Chaise McNally. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 34 years, Florence M. Barren Utterback, Oct. 5, 2014.

Jim's family will greet friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 to 9:45 a.m. Monday in the FRANK KAPR FUNERAL HOME INC., 417 W. Pittsburgh St., Scottdale, where his funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, with the Rev. Jeff Welsh officiating. A pass and review will be held at 9:40 a.m. by members of Southmoreland Veterans Association, Honor Guard. Committal services and interment will follow in Scottdale Cemetery, with full military honors accorded at the gravesite by the Southmoreland Veterans Association Honor Guard.
