Born Adolph Arentz, the son of William and Christine (Humberg) Arentz, Rev. Father Theodore Arentz, O.F.M., came to America from Germany in 1871. He entered the Franciscan Order at Teutopolis, Illinois, and after ordination to the priesthood in 1876, he served in St. Louis, Missouri, from 1879 until 1882. He then went to Humphrey, Nebraska, where he was the founding pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. After serving at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Cleveland, Ohio, he was named Provincial of the Sacred Heart Franciscan Friars. He came to California in 1899, and served at the Mission Santa Barbara, where he was the pastor and superior of the friary until 1910. He also served as one of the first definitors and commissary provincials of the Saint Barbara Province of Franciscan friars in California, Washington, Oregon and Arizona, starting in 1916, and he later served as Commissary of the Holy Land for the Western United States. Father Theodore died at Santa Barbara at age 74.
