Heart Ailment Is Fatal To Smith, 79
Howard E. Smith, 79, 2146 Seventh Ave., was dead on arrival at a local hospital Monday, after suffering a heart ailment.
Mr. Smith retired in 1945 after serving 31 years as a Union Pacific Railroad clerk. He worked five years for the Missouri Pacific in Omaha and the Illinois Central in Council Bluffs.
Since his retirement, he spent most of his time on a stamp collection and traveling.
His collection holds stamps from the 13 allied nations and various issues honoring famous authors, poets, scientists and inventors.
Born at Blair, Neb., he had been a Council Bluffs resident 49 years.
He was a member of the Fifth Avenue Methodist Church, American War Dads, National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employes Union Oldtimers Club and Excelsior Lodge 259, AF and AM.
Survivors include: widow, Ruby; two daughters, Mrs. R. E. Haworth of Council Bluffs and Mrs. J. R. Jongresso of Denver, Colo.; stepson, Kenneth Boyer of Council Buffs; sister, Mrs. George Badgrow of Blair, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Cutler Chapel. The Rev. Clarence W. Woollard of Fifth Avenue Methodist Church will officiate. Following the pastor’s service, Masonic rites will be held at the chapel by Excelsior Lodge 259. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.
