Crossville Chronicle June 5, 1930

Crossville became greatly disturbed just after noon on Tuesday when a report reached town that one man had been killed and several othes shot at Crab Orchard. Telephone calls failed to locate the trouble, but later in the day it was learned that 2 cousins had shot it out near Pine Orchard in Morgan county.
The daily press carried the details somewhat as follows:
A "cow spree" back in the hills a year ago resulted Tuesday in the roar of shotguns and Newt Alley, 29, was killed in an automobile and John Alley is seriously wounded and in the Chamberlain Hospital, Rockwood, not expected to live.
The cousins are said to have been enemies since about a year ago when John killed Newt's brother Dee Alley. This shooting was reported to have been accidental. John and Dee were out hunting for their cows. The cows had come upon some moonshine mash while grazing in Morgan county and preferred it to the grass. John's shotgun, at that time, was said to have caught on a twig and was discharged, killing his cousin Dee.
Tuesday John Alley was digging post holes near the home of W T Stone, Pine Orchard. He says "Newt came up to me, shook hands and said he didn't have anything against me for accidentally killing his brother a year ago. He went off and came back again, saying the same thing. I kept on at work. Later I heard a shotgun in the direction in which Newt had gone; I jumped into a clump of bushes".
John said he went into the house, got a shotgun and when Newt turned his automobile to drive away, fired at him. Newt Alley was killed. Another man in the car is said to have jumped out and run.
John Alley was taken to the Rockwood hospital seriously wounded.
