Henry Ehlers was born in Dennison, Iowa, on February 11, 1902, to Heinrich and Christina Ehlers, both immigrants from Germany.
He came to North Dakota as a toddler with his four brothers and five sisters, and attended country school north of McHenry with Pearl Farnsworth as his teacher.
On October 19, 1936, he married Edythe Baker, daughter of Bill and Catherine Baker.
The Ehlers, both members of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, had four sons:
Donald, born October 15, 1937, served in the Armed Forces and married Sally Nemec on February 11, 1961. They operate a grain/cattle ranch at Midland, SD, and have four children.
Darrel, Born December 23, 1938, married Arlene Bergstad and reside at McHenry.
Henry (Hank), born March 28, 1942, and Connie Smith were married September 1, 1962, and presently reside in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where Henry is vice president of the Essex Corporation,
Marlin, born May 20, 1954, married Mary Lou Trostad July 18, 1975. The couple live on the home farm fourteen miles north of McHenry.
Henry Sr. died July 2, 1985, and Edythe died June 30, 1991. They are buried in Bethlehem Cemetery.

The funeral for Edith Mary Ehlers, 79, McHenry, was Wednesday, July 3 at 2 p.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, McHenry, Pastor David Fretham officiated and Virginia Kjelgaard was organist. Special music was provided by Our Savior's Ladies Chorus. Interment at Bethlehem Cemetery, McHenry. She died Sunday, June 30, 1991 at Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake.
Pallbearers were grandsons; Donnie Ehlers, Rory Ehlers, Kevin Ehlers, Darwin Ehlers, Howard Ehlers, Aaron Ehlers, Kyle Ehlers and Kerry Ehlers.
Edith Baker was born April 30, 1912 in McHenry, the daughter of William and Catherine (Sherrick) Baker. She was raised at McHenry and attended school there. On October 17, 1936, she married Henry Ehlers at New Rockford. The lived and farmed near Hamar, ND. On July 2, 1985 Mr. Ehlers died. In 1985 she moved to McHenry.
Survivors include four sons, Donald, Midland, SD; Darrel, McHenry; Henry Jr. Tiffin, Ohio and Marlen, Tolna, ND; 14 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; one sister, Ann Harding, McHenry. She was preceded in death by her husband and one great-grandson.
