I found his NY Birth Index record showing he was born July 10, 1922. I also found 2nd Lt. John J. Gehring is listed on the roster of WWII Dead, nativity, New York. Unfortunately it doesn't have exact date of death.
I also found John's Cadet photo, he graduated from 63rd Army Air Forces Contract Pilot School, Class of 1943-F, Squadron H. I've attached photo from the school.
