Gair Roosevelt Allie Sr attended Statesvile High School in North Carolina where he excelled in education as well as athletics. He choose an athletic scholarship to play baseball at Wake Forest University over a football scholarship at the University of North Carolina. While in college he was being scouted by the Pittsburgh Pirates as well as the New York Yankees. In 1952 he choose to play for the Pirates who sent him to the New Orleans Pelicans. Due to his popularity within the New Orleans community and his baseball ability he was awarded the honorary mayor of New Orleans. He played his first major league game on April 13, 1954.

He was drafted into the Army during the Korean war.

After baseball and the army he opened Raffle Restaurant and Bar in 1987 which he operated until 2015 with his family.

He had many friends and never meet a stranger.

He is survived by his wife, one daughter, two sons and three grandchildren, one great grandchild and one sister.
