Jerimiah Tillotson was one of the first settlers of Steuben County,
Indiana, settling in Fremont.He arrived in the Fall of 1835. He is the son of Nathan Tillotson and Phoebe West. He built the first log home in Fremont, and his nephew, Demary Tillotson built the second.
In 1818 Jerimiah went from Pittsford, New York to Sandusky, Ohio, and then sometime after that, on to Branch Co. Michigan. In 1835 he settled in Fremont, Indiana. He owned a tavern in Branch Co. Michigan. He also fought in the War of 1812, where he is listed as a Private in Captain William McKinstry's Co. 52nd New York Militia. His service Commenced January 2, 1814 and expired January 30, 1814. His pay for service was $7.48 dollars. This Regiment was also called Hopkin's 52nd New York Militia. He was also a Lieutenant in Co. 3 3rd Brigade, Second Division Michigan Militia. On May 23, 1832 this unit was ordered out to repel Indians. He also took one of his daughters to California for health reasons, but she died while on the trip.
Jeremiah's 1st wife Mary Jane Miller is most likely related to the Andrew J. Miller family that immigrated to Pittsford, Monroe Co. New York around 1795, Andrew and his wife Hannah had 8 children, Benjamin, Isaac, Joseph, James, Eunice, Elizabeth, Hannah and Andrew Jr. James Miller married Sally Tillotson, a sister to Jeremiah.
