Edward W. Vann enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 8 May 1862 as a Private mustered in Company A of the 8th Florida Infantry. His residence was not listed on his service record. On 12 June 1862 he transferred into Company E, 5th Florida Infantry. On 9 March 1863 he was transferred into Company G, 11th Florida Infantry. Edward was captured while on picket on 10 September 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia and held as a prisoner of war at Point Lookout, Maryland. He died of disease (chronic diarrhea) on 26 October 1864 while at Point Lookout, Maryland.

Edward moved with his mother and father to Madison Co., FL in 1845. Where he later married, Mary Elizabeth Goff, daughter of Deacon William Cooper Goff and Jinsey Woods, in Madison Co., Florida, on 10 Mar 1849. Edward was a farmer, he most likely worked on his father's 180 acre farm in Hamburg, Madison Co., FL, near the Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Along with his brothers, James Emery, Phillip Hinton, Thomas Jeremiah, and John Walls. By 1860 Edward age 33, was the sheriff on Madison Co., FL.

When the Civil War broke out Edward Washington enlisted in Company A, FL 8th Infantry on 8 May 1862 and was later transferred to Company E. 5th Florida Infantry on 12 Jun 1862. James Emery enlisted on January 1863 in Captain Robert H. Gambles Artillery Battery of Leon Co., Florida. Thomas Jeremiah enlisted in the 1st Florida Regiment Co. F commanded by Capt. John W. Holloman and served until honorable discharged on May 20 1862. Thomas reenlisted in Company E 5th Florida Regiment as 1st Lt, commanded by Col. Hatley. John Walls enlisted in Company E 5th Florida Regiment, in April 1862.

Edward died 26 Oct 1864 in Point Lookout Prisoner of War Camp, Point Lookout, St. Mary's Co., Maryland.

His wife, Mary, applied for a widow's pension on 28 Sep 1889 in Suwannee Co., Florida, age 69y. Confederate Pension Application File A11789
