James was the son of Hugh Anderson Akers and Elizabeth Dunson. His siblings were Sarah Ellen, William, Mary Jane, Catherine A., Robert, Richard M. and Margaret.

He married Malissa Elizabeth Seek on June 5, 1859 in Knoxville Township, Ray County, Missouri. Their children were Sarah Elizabeth 'Belle', Joseph James, Jacob Anderson, William D. 'Moby' and Eliza A 'Lida'.

James was a Confederate Civil War Veteran and served as Private in Company C, 3rd Infantry Regiment Missouri.

Paternal grandparents were Joseph Akers and Janet Neel.

Maternal grandparents were Jacob Seeke/Seek and Louisa Virginia "Jennie" Robinson.
