He went to visit relatives in McDowell County in the early part of 1902. While there, he became ill and died suddenly. According to family stories he was buried in McDowell County, but to date his grave has not been found. It would seem very likely that he was laid to rest in the cemetery above his brother's home on Buck Creek. Several members of the Chapman family are buried there.
