Eugene "Tike" Strathman

August 16, 1925 - September 23, 2016

Eugene “Tike” Henry Strathman – age 91, of Pocahontas, passed away Friday, September 23, 2016, at the Arlington Place of Pocahontas, Iowa.

Tike was born to Frank J & Anne (Dultimeier) Strathman in Pocahontas, Iowa, on August 16, 1925, the 6th of 8 children.

He served in WW II in the U. S. Navy on the LSM 11 from 1943-46. Tike helped preserve and honor the WW II Pacific veterans adding his story to National Museum of the Pacific War’s Oral History Program.

After the war, he joined his father as a 3rd generation professional photographer in Pocahontas. He was a member of Professional Photographers of America and in 1966 was chosen Iowa Photographer of the Year. Tike was their president in 1974 and on the PPA board of directors for 15 years winning a National Service Award in 1976. The Strathman family, back to his grandfather Frank B., had been photographers since 1880 starting in Mascoutah Illinois. At one time there were more Strathman photographers than any other family owned studios in the country.

He married E. Annette Keane of Panama, Iowa in November 1947 and they lived in Pocahontas raising their family of 6 children. They ran Strathman Studio until retiring in 1983 after 36 years. He considered it a photographer’s job to “capture a person’s personality” on film. Many wedding or graduation portraits have the “Strathman Studio” stamp on them.

Tike was a partner of Colormasters Inc, a Pocahontas Councilman, a member of Knights of Columbus, and the Rotary Club. He became a member of the retired USS LSM Association and in his later years. Tike felt his 10 years at Pocahontas Catholic School tutoring kids were his most rewarding. He played the game of golf until he could no longer see.

He is survived by children Bill Strathman of Phoenix AZ, Cheryl (Fred) Anderson of South Lyon, MI, Jean (Larry) Peterson of Pocahontas, Sheila (Stan) Anderson of Maple Grove, MN, Jill (John) Breczinski of Golden Valley, MN, Paul (Joy) Strathman of Ballwin, MO, and sister Betty Kemmer. He died having 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren.

Tike was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Annette, brothers Frank and Jerry, sisters Kathryn,Grace, Rosann and Donna.

He will be deeply missed by all that knew and loved him.
