James P. Sparks who for several years has conducted the barber shop at the corner of State and S. Park streets and who is know to hundreds of Decatur men as "Dad" Sparks died at 7:40 oclock Christmas morning at his home 326 N. 18th street. He was sixty seven years old last April. His death was caused by paralysis. He had suffered two strokes earlier in the years and was only able to visit his shop occasionally. The third stroke came last Wednesday afternoon and he never rallied.
Mr.Sparks was born in Markle, Ind. April 20, 1861. For many years he resided in Sadorus and he and Miss Lucinda Craw were married there in 1891.
He conducted a barber shop in Sadorus for sixteen years before coming to Decatur twenty two years ago. For eleven years he conducted a barber shop in the 200 block E.William street. He was held in high regard by all who knew him. He was kind hearted and charitable and gave liberally to all worthy causes.
He is survived by his wife and two children,Mrs.Mabelle Hornstein and LaMar Sparks both of Decatur and a granddaughter, Loretta Bailey. A daughter Mrs. Birdie Knudson died last May. There are four grandsons. He also leaves a brother Frank Sparks of Dillon Colo. and a sister Mrs.Birdie Hobson of Berkeley Cal.
The body was taken to Moran & Sons funeral directors and was taken to the home Tuesday afternoon where friends may call.
