Donald L. "Dan" Krueger, age 87, of Mankato, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 18, 2016, at Laurels Edge Assisted Living with family by his side.

A memorial service was held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 23, 2016, at Christ The King Lutheran Church in Mankato with Pastor Patrick Patterson and Pastor Trish Reedstrom officiating. Visitation took place one hour prior to the service at the church building. Burial occurred at a later date at New Woodlawn Cemetery in Pipestone. In lieu of flowers, memorials were preferred to Christ The King Lutheran Church or a favorite charity of donor’s choice. Mankato Mortuary assisted the family with arrangements.

Donald was born in rural Redwood County on May 28, 1929, to Walter E.H. and Anna (née Radanz) Krueger. He graduated from Redwood Falls High School, where he was introduced to his wife, LaVon “Bonnie” Conrad. They were united in marriage on August 28, 1949, at St. James Lutheran Church in Holland, MN. They moved to Morgan, MN in 1953, where they were proprietors of the former Morgan Bowling Center. In 1962, he and his family moved to Mankato, MN. Dan worked with Bonnie at Minnesota State University, Mankato's Centennial Student Union as a recreation director and men’s bowling coach until his retirement in 1993. He had been the national director of the Association of College Unions, a member of the Minnesota State Bowling Hall of Fame, and a charter member of the Mankato City Bowling Hall of Fame. Dan was honored to throw the first pitch at a Minnesota Twins game on May 11, 1990, in recognition of his work with collegiate bowling. He had been a member of Christ The King Lutheran Church, where he served as an usher for Saturday evening worship services.

The North Shore of Lake Superior, the American West, Spain, and fall color road trips were among his favorite travel destinations with Bonnie and other family members. Dan was known for his strong, unwavering Christian faith and his low-key sense of humor. He enjoyed spending time with family, fishing, vintage westerns, and watching Minnesota sports teams. Go Gophers!

Survivors included his children: Daniel, Michael "Mike", and Jeffrey "Jeff" (Jackie Mattila) Krueger; grandchildren, Erin (Toni Frutos) Krueger, Matthew "Matt" (Heather) Krueger; step-grandchildren Patricia (James) Paquette, Adam Puglisi; great-grandchildren, Emily, Michael, Hank, Brennan, Tessa, Makenna, Jameson, and Dominik; siblings, Harold (Phyllis), Virginia (Bill) Schmidt, Darlene (Mark) Nelson, Curt (Norma), Walter, Alan (Diane), Myron (Peg), Duane (Linda), and Richard (Mary); and many loving nieces, nephews, in-laws, and former MSU students.

Preceding Dan's passing were his parents; wife, LaVon “Bonnie” in May 2016; and sister, Gladys Mahlum.

Mr. Krueger’s family expressed appreciation to Mayo Clinic Health Systems, Mayo Clinic Hospice, and Laurels Edge Assisted Living for the outstanding care Dan received.
