Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, the oldest of 5 children of Lawrence J. Welch and Lenore Dean, of Bellevue, Ohio. Her siblings were L. Michael Welch, Mary Sheila, Judith Ann and Patricia Catherine.
She attended St. Agnes Academy, Webster College of Webster Groves, Missouri and Butler College of Indianapolis. She also attended the summer school of Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont.
Margaret was employed during World War II at Alison Division of General Motors in Indianapolis where B 52's were made. She and her sister then moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico where she worked for a Chevrolet dealership.
Wanting to get help for a social disability she suffered from, she visited several places in the West without success. Miss Welch came East to Philadelphia to see a disciple of Otto Rank. While there, she worked in the admissions office of the University of Pennsylvania.
She came to New York City and worked for the United Nations Engineering Center where she was recording secretary for a small group of leaders in the field of information services. Miss Welch considered herself fortunate to have worked briefly as Secretary for Dorothy Day before Miss Day decided to handle her worldwide correspondences by herself.
Following the Charismatic Movement, she moved to Providence, RI, where she joined Saint Patrick's Parish with Fr. Raymond Kelly's permission. She was a social activist, picketing the abortion clinic on Point Street, and promoting left wing causes with friends. She volunteered at the Providence Public Library, Matthewson Street Church Office and Amos House. Her hobbies were drawing and photography. She invited people to lunch in her apartment, where she also offered hospitality to people in need of a place to stay.
Miss Welch was a client of P.A.C.E day care center and spent her last years in a nursing home in the Northeast. she enjoyed life a the day care center and became acquainted with Hoyer.
Margaret was a daily communicant and had a keen intellect and ongoing interest in the affairs of the world. She enjoyed inviting people to meals and had a good sense of humor. It was a blessing to spend time with her.
Her funeral will be held on Friday, October 7, 2016 at 8:45 am, from the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith Street, Providence. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am, in Saint Patrick Church, 244 Smith Street, Providence. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Providence.
