Dr. John R. Allen, Jr., D.V.M. 93, passed away on September 29, 2016 at Sherman Terrace of the Chillicothe VA Medical Center, Chillicothe, Ohio surrounded by his son, daughter, and son-in-law." Doc" was born on April 24, 1923 in Vigo, Ohio to John R. and Mary A. Allen.
John grew up in Ross County, Ohio and graduated from Buckskin High School in South Salem, Ohio in 1942. He attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio for 2 years and was then drafted. He served in the Army Airforce from 1942-1945. He was a medic and a lab technician in the 449th Bomb Squadron, The Flying Horsemen, stationed in Italy. After discharge he attended The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine using funds from the GI Bill. He graduated in 1949.
John married June McCloskey of Fruitdale, Ohio at the Fruitdale Methodist Church on December 8, 1945. In 1949, they moved to Waverly, Ohio and established John's veterinary practice. June served as John's secretary, office assistant and all round helper all the years of his practice. They raised three children, John, Jennifer and James. He was a member of Waverly Grace United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge and the Order of the Shriners. He was very involved in high school sports throughout Pike County, especially the Waverly Tigers, for many years. John loved serving as the President of the Waverly Booster Club. He was also the Pike County Fair veterinarian for over 50 years and loved the interaction he had with members of the 4H clubs and their animals. In 1972 "Doc" Allen was elected as a Pike County Commissioner and served 5 4 year terms. During this time the commissioners were responsible for bringing many improvements to Pike County. One that Doc was very proud of was the development of the Emergency Medical Services. He was proud to serve all the citizens of Pike County. "Doc" served on many boards and for many organizations. The positions he loved most were son, father, uncle, grandfather and great grandfather.
He was an avid sports fan and loved the Buckeyes, the Reds, the Bengals and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his lifelong love June, one brother Ralph M. Allen, sister-in-law Bettyann Allen, and a brother-in-law, Robert Crusie, his beloved first born son, John R. Allen, lll as well as nephews Dale Allen, Timothy Irons, Robert Staats and Joseph Allen.
John is survived by his daughter, Dr. Jennifer Allen and husband Alan R. Davis of Chillicothe, Ohio and son James E. Allen of Waverly, Ohio, a sister, Marian Crusie of Morehead, Kentucky. Grandchildren Andrea Beth Allen Stubblefield and husband Brian of Dallas, Texas, Rebecca Anne Allen Sparrow and husband Jamie of Akron, Ohio, James Davis and wife Anna of Lebanon, Ohio, John Davis and wife Jennifer of Odenton, Maryland, and Rebecca Davis Finley and husband Charles of Katy, Texas, nephews and nieces John Paul Irons and wife Barbel of Silver City, New Mexico, Neil Marvin McCloskey and wife Kathleen of Canton, Michigan, Carolyn Hilty of Brookfield , Ohio, Phil Allen and wife Sally of Boca Raton, Florida, Leeann Keeys of Morehead , Kentucky, Jeffrey Allen of Waverly, Ohio and Melissa Allen Sucich and husband Victor of Sparta, New Jersey. June is also survived by ten great grandchildren and many great nieces and nephews.
Doc was lovingly cared for by the staff of Sherman Terrace at the Chillicothe Veteran's Administration Medical Center for the last 3 months of his life.
Funeral Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday 4 October 2016 at the Boyer Funeral Home in Waverly with Pastor Charley Ross, Officiating. Military graveside services will be conducted by American Legion Merritt Post #142, Waverly
Friends may call at the Boyer Funeral Home from 5 - 7 p.m. Monday and from 9:00 a.m. until the service hour on Tuesday. Mason services will be held 7:00 p.m. Monday by Orient Lodge #321 F & A.M. Waverly.
Memorial donations may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, Pike County Senior Citizens, Waverly Booster Club, or any organization to help fellow veterans.
