Gladys (Holland) Davis is the daughter of Ivy Ransom Holland and his first wife, Roma Isadora Lee (Brown) Holland.

Gladys is my cousin. Her Grandmother, Marinda Ann (Durham) Holland, and my Great-Grandfather, George Richard Durham were sister and brother, both children of Young Marcus Alexander Hezikiah Durham (15 Sept 1823 Orange Co., NC - 02 Nov 1900 Dallas, Paulding Co., GA) and Mariah L. (Elsberry) Durham (02 Feb 1828 Paulding Co., GA - 29 Aug 1898 Dallas, Paulding Co., GA).

Ivy Ransom Holland, born in Dallas, Paulding Co., Georgia, worked as Mark Car Conductor - Street P.W. in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia, in 1910; then he worked as an Assistant Forman at Boiler Room in Walker Co., Alabama; in 1930, he was an Engineer at the Sugar Mill in Hendry Co., FL.

Ivy Ransom Holland and his first wife, Roma Isadora Lee (Brown) Holland were married 27 Aug 1905 in Paulding Co, GA, and they had two children together by their marriage:

(1) Gladys (Holland) Davis (14 Jun 1906 GA - 13 Apr 1987 Al)

(2) Inez (Holland) Trammell (21 Mar 1908 GA - 29 Nov 1997 NC).


Their mother, Roma Isadora Lee (Brown) Holland, died during the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918, leaving Ivy Ransom Holland a widower with two young girls.

On 09 Aug 1920, Ivy Ransom Holland married Sabra Jane (Buttram) Gann, the widow of John William Gann. Sabra had one child by her first marriage:

(1) John Dennis Gann (27 Feb 1919 - 29 Jun 1954).


Gladys and Inez Holland were thrilled to death to have a big brother.

Ivy Ransom Holland and Sabra Jane (Buttram) Gann Holland's family soon began to grow and their other children were:

(1) James Burttram Holland (1922 AL - 8 Jun 1946 Sanborn, South Dakota. He was killed in an airplane crash.

(2) William Dean Holland (25 Dec 1927 FL - Feb 28, 2008 Clewiston, Hendry, FL).

(3) Sabra Louise Holland (She died at birth on 01 Feb 1930 Moore Haven, Glades, FL).

(4) Eleanor Sue Holland (1933 FL - unknown)

Ivy Holland Rites Held

Special to the Miami Daily News -- Clewiston, Feb. 6--- Funeral services were to be held today for Ivy R. Holland, 63, who died of a heart attack at his home.

A resident of Clewiston from the past 24 years, he was a native of Dallas Ga. He was a pump operator for the Everglades Drainage District.

He is survived by his wife, Sabra J. of Clewiston; two sons, William Dean Holland, Clewiston; John D. Gann, Clewiston: three daughters, Mrs. Elinor Sue Davis, Gadsden, Ala., and Mrs. Inez Tramell of Rome, Ga.; one brother, and nine grandchildren.

Services were to be held at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. L.P. Fagan officiating. Graveside Masonic services were to be held at Ortona cemetery, with the Sugarland F and AM 281 in charge. The Futch funeral home was in charge of arrangements.

(1) Virginia Lee Holland


James Raymond Davis was a native of Piedmont and a resident of Gadsden since 1923. He was a member of the Chanced Choir since 1924. Mr. Davis was a graduate of Jacksonville State College and graduated from Auburn in 1923 with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. He was Gadsden High School's first basketball coach and served as principal from 1930 to 1945 and retired from teaching at Gadsden High School in 1964. After retirement he taught adult night school for 26 years and taught at Snead College for four years. He was a member of the Gadsden Quarterback Club, the Etowah County Auburn Alumni and the Etowah County Historical Society. Mr. Davis was a veteran of World War I. The field house at Gadsden High School was named for Mr. Davis.

Mrs. Gladys Holland Davis, 1945 Davis Drive, died Monday.

Survivors: daughter, Dr. Virginia Davis Gauld, Birmingham.

Collier-Butler Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Graveside services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Forrest Cemetery with the Rev. Pete West officiating.

Other survivors: grandchildren, Lee Franklin Bauer, Denson Nauls Franklin III; step grandchildren, James Bryan and Lisa Beth Gauld, Debra Gauld Lofton; sister, Mrs. Donald Trammell, Rome, Ga.

Mrs. Davis was a resident of Gadsden most of her life and was the widow of the late James Raymond Davis. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Berean Sunday School Class and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The body will remain at the funeral home until the hour of service. The family will receive friends from 5-7 tonight.
