Mary Elaine (Rice) Tubandt, 94, of Redfield SD, passed away peacefully at Golden Living Center in Redfield on Monday, September 26, 2016. Her funeral service was Saturday, October 1, 2016 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Redfield. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery in Redfield.

Mary Elaine Rice was born March 13, 1922 in Flandreau, SD. She was the first born of John and Mae (Gothier) Rice. She grew up on the family farm, losing her mother to tuberculosis when she was 16. Her Grandma Gothier stayed with them during the school year to help raise them. Mary had only fond memories and stories of her Grandma Gothier. Mary graduated Valedictorian of her class from Flandreau High School. She always said it was not because she was so smart, just all the other kids in her class were dumber than she was.

She went onto teachers college in Madison, SD. From there, she started her teaching career which brought her to Ashton, SD, where she met Virgil Tubandt. Their courtship started and they later married and lived on the Tubandt homestead. They had five children: Keith, Kathleen, Virginia, Dean and Sharon. Much laughter and hard work every day completed the bonds of the family.

Mary’s greatest love was teaching. After taking time off to have her children, she started teaching at the Wheaton Country School west of the farm until it closed. She then moved into the Redfield School District, finishing out her career teaching second graders. She said she wasn’t too sure about teaching second grade when she started, but found she loved teaching her “little second graders” as she always referred to them.

Music was another love Mary had. She directed choruses, church choir, started Sweet Adelines and sang at many functions. She always carried her pitch pipe, never knowing when she might need it to start a group singing.

Her love for her husband, children, teaching, and music was rounded out with her love of sewing and crocheting. She sewed many outfits and crocheted afghans for all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She put special thought into each afghan she made to make it unique for each person.

Mary is survived by her children: Keith (Deanna) Tubandt of Berryville, VA; Kathleen (Scott) Cole of Burelson, TX; Virginia (Brian) Bain of Gillette, WY; Dean (Geraldine) Tubandt of Fairbanks, AK; and Sharon (Richard) Beardemphl of Ashton, SD. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and one brother, Leo Rice of Flandreau.

She is preceded in death by her husband Virgil; her nine month old great grandson Bronx Foss; her sister Rita and her brother James.
