Marie R. James Grove Keefer

Marie passed away on 9/13/2016 at the age of 101 yrs. young with family by her side at the Thornwald Nursing Home in Carlisle. We would like to thank the staff and care givers at Thornwald for their excellent care for our Mother from the day she checked in, to the day she went to be with the Lord. We also would like to thank them for the hospitably and caring shown to us the last few days of our Mother's life.

She was born Dec. 21,1914 in Carlisle to the late Jacob L. & Ada (Gottwerth) James. She was preceded in death by her 1st husband Miles G. Grove, and 2nd husband Warren Keefer, two brothers Lewis & Leo James, and Granddaughter Autum Marie Sunday.

She graduated from Carlisle High School in 1933 and lived in Carlisle all her life. She was a member of Carlisle United Methodist Church until recently becoming the oldest living member at the young age of 101 to join the Carlisle First Church of God.

Through the years she was employed by Montgomery Ward, Bedford Shoe, Hunts Crystal, and retired from the Navy Depot in 1975. After retirement she became a N.A.R.F.E. chaper #373 member and she and her best friend Vada Hochenberry coordinated and ran bus trips for N.A.R.F.E. for 25 years. She was also a member of the Golden Ages of Mt. Holly Spg., Marine Corps League Aux, Elks lodge of Carlisle, Eastern Star Lodge 375, Plainfield Grange, and she also helped the Amvets pack boxes to send to the military.

She loved working in the garden planting flowers and vegetables, Every time she would pick the harvest she would take them around to family and friends. She also loved going for drives in the country and feeding and watching the birds. Most of all she loved her family and friends.

She is survived by two sisters Phyllis (Melven) Murtorff and Jean (Elmer) Warner, one daughter Dona Heishman (Paul Caphart), three sons William (Norma), James (Sis), and Richard (Mary) Grove, and a step daughter Dottie Brown (Thomas); 7 grandchildren, Linda (Ron) Chesky, Terry Tidd, Lonney (Patti) Grove, Doug (Daris) Grove, Mark (Lisa) Grove, Randy (Angie) Heishman, and Gus Radle. 11 great grand children, 10 great, great, grand children, and 1 great, great, great grand daughter, and several nieces & nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the First Church Of God 705 Glendale St. Carlisle, Pa. on Saturday 9/24/ 2016 at 11 am officiated by Pastor Greg Hench & Pastor Mike Poe. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made in Marie's name to the First Church Of God to the address above. In life she would always tell you "I love you", her last words when leaving this world was "I love you" She will be deeply missed by family, friends, and all that ever knew her. We love you Mom.
