Janet Esselstyn Perkins was born on September 12 1894, in Morgantown, Monongalia County, West Virginia, United States of America, to Francis William Rane and Elizabeth Mimi Rane.
Janet had 2 siblings: Fannie C. Randolph and Ainsworth Rane.
Janet graduated with honors from Wellesley College and worked afterwards as a research assistant and administrator.
Janet married James Ripley Osgood Perkins on June 17 1922, at age 27 in Church of the Transfiguration, New York City, New York.Osgood Perkins(16 May 1892-21 Sept. 1937), actor, was born in West Newton, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston, the son of Henry Perkins, a physician, and Helen Anthony Perkins. Janet also grew up in Newton; her father was the state forester.
They had one child: actor Anthony Perkins, born April 4, 1932.
"Oggie" Perkins was staring in a pre-Broadway tryout of "Susan and God" on 20 September 1937, in Washington, D.C. Perkins was unaccustomedly nervous that evening before the performance, and he complained of heartburn, a sore throat, and pains in his arms. But he gave what was later described as a riveting performance. His last recorded words were, "I like that role. I hope the play never closes." Early the next morning, around 2 A.M., the forty-five-year-old Perkins collapsed suddenly and died from a heart attack in his Washington hotel room, his wife at his side.
After her husband's death, Janet continued to work and helped to run the Rane family business in Newton, the Boston Gardening Co. She and her young son spent time between Boston and Palm Beach, FL where her mother had relocated.
