He continued to live with his uncle until he enlisted on 6 June 1863 into the Co "B" MA 3rd Heavy Artillery. He mustered out 29 Aug 1865 as Sergeant with three years of service: He was a guard in the Washington DC prison where President Lincoln visited each day and shook hands with the soldiers.
