CITIZEN-TIMES OCT 20, 2006:
Patricia Thompson of Greer, S.C., died suddenly, Wednesday, Oct 18, 2006 at Greenville Memorial Hospital after suffering a massive stroke. She was 62 years old. Mrs. Thompson retired as a physician's assistant from St. Joseph Urgent Care in 2004. Through St. Joe's, she provided medical care to the students and staff at Warren Wilson College Infirmary for many years, where she was known as Nurse Patti. Mrs. Thompson was born Jan. 1, 1944 in Meridian, MS to the late Dr. Hackett Bennett and the late Elsie Venable Bennett. At the age of 28, as a single mother with three small children, she entered the first physician's assistant college program in the state of Mississippi. At graduation, she became one of the first three women certified as physician's assistants in that state. She spent every summer from the age of seven to 17 at Camp Montreat for Girls and considered her times there to be her favorite childhood memories. She so loved the mountains of Western North Carolina that she moved her family here in 1982. Although she devoted her career to helping people, she found her greatest joy in animals. Mrs. Thompson often picked up injured wildlife and cats and dogs alike from roadways and provided these animals with veterinary care out of her own pocket. She had numerous pets over the years, all of them rescued from one danger or another. No creature was too aged, homely or damaged for her love and attention. Mrs. Thompon is survived by two brothers, James Hackett Bennett of Galveston, Texas, and Wade Richard Gardner Bennett of Denver, CO; sister, Susan Bennett of Asheville; two sons, Austin Lee Cartwright of Greer and Graham Bennett Thompson of Swannanoa, N.C.; two daughters, Cynthia Petrovich of Fairview, N.C. and Gena Cartwright Oakes also of Greer; five grandchildren, Lee Austin Reeves of Candler, N.C., Madelyn and Samantha Petrovich of Fairview and Katie Oakes and Nicholas Cartwright, both of Greer. Her brother, John Hackett Bennett of Anchorage, Alaska, passed away in 1989. Mrs. Thompson leaves 3 dogs, Audrey, Hoss and Vegas, as well as 3 cats, Tom, Harley and Wokki. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, at Warren Wilson Presbyterian Church and College Chapel in Swannanoa. A reception for friends and family will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Petrovich home. Donations may be made to the Asheville Humane Society.
