Leo Surnear
Found Dead
In Auto Lot
Leo Surnear, 64, a resident of the Montgomery County Home, was found dead in the rear seat of a car in a Canajoharie used car lot yesterday afternoon.
Montgomery County Coroner Raymond E. Wytrwal of St. Johnsville, who was at the scene, said death was due to natural causes.
Two unidentified men looking at used cars in the Ferraro Motor Sales lot off Erie Blvd. discovered the body about 1:30 p.m. and Canajoharie Police Chief Fred Schrader, Sheriff Alton R. Dingman and Deputy William S. Wert were summoned.
The man had apparently been dead several days and because of the condition of the body identification was not made until about 5:30.
Surnear left the county home on Tuesday and apparently was on his way to the Shineman farm in Happy Hollow, where he frequently made visits.
Surnear was born July 12, 1897 in Sprakers, the son of Chester and Laura Lambert Surnear, and spent most of his life in the Canajoharie area.
A veteran of World War I, he lived at the county home since 1949.
Surviving are a brother, Raymond Surnear, Amsterdam, and nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were scheduled for this afternoon at the county home cemetery, with the Rev. Ralph Curtis of the Canajoharie Methodist Church officiating.
Arrangements are by the Lenz funeral home of Canajoharie.
