BOONVILLE - Wilbur Ewing Robertson, 90, of Boonville, passed away on Friday, Dec. 1, 2006, at Woodmont Health Campus. He was born on Nov. 28, 1916, in Warrick County, to Wilson and Eva (Arnold) Robertson.
As a youth, Wilbur helped his family farm. He was a 1935 graduate of Boonville High School. After graduation, he worked at the Moses Rosenthal garment factory in Boonville and later in Mount Vernon's garment factory. He and his three brothers joined the military in 1942 at the beginning of World War II. Wilbur served as a field radio operator in the 82nd Airborne Division of the 307th Engineers. He served in North Africa and participated in the invasion on the shores of Italy, near Salerno. He was wounded there on Sept. 23, 1943, and subsequently lost his right leg.
Wilbur married Margaret Theresa Hart on April 10, 1944. He worked as a bookkeeper throughout his life, first at Sunlight mine, and then at Wright's Packing Company, Chandler, for many years. After Wright's closed, he was employed by Hester Motors until his retirement.
He was a life member of the Strangers' Rest Masonic Lodge of Boonville, where he was Master in 1958, a 32nd Degree Mason, and also a member of the Scottish Rite. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Boonville Post 3418 Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a ham radio operator and enjoyed his many contacts as K9TJU, "Tall Jumping Uncle." He spent many happy hours trap shooting with his friends at the Boonville Gun Club. He also enjoyed being with his large extended family from Indiana and Kentucky at the annual Robertson reunions.
Wilbur is survived by his wife of 62 years, Margaret; other survivors include his daughter, Kay Anne and her husband, Ron Peake, of Dale; and his son, Clinton Robertson and his wife, Anne (Knight). Also surviving are his grandsons, Monte Peake and wife, Meredith (Willard), of St. Louis, Tom Robertson, of Charlestown, and Matt Robertson, of Indianapolis; also surviving is his great-granddaughter, Addisyn Peake, of St. Louis; also surviving are his brother, Arnold Robertson, and sister, Frances Fuller, both of Evansville; many cousins; and nieces and nephews and their families, who will remember him as "Uncle Wib."
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Bertha Swope, and his brothers, Walter and Eugene Robertson.
