Alice E. Whipple, 101, Lake Geneva, died Wednesday at Conroe Health Care Center, Conroe, Texas. Alice Whipple was born on September 13, 1915 in Asansol Bengal State in India in a railway quarter home. She trusted in Jesus for eternal life at 4 years old. She was schooled at home until high school during which time she traveled around. Her father, John Whipple, sent her to the tea gardens in the hills where she was taken care of by different missionaries. She attended 4 years of high school at Woodstock School in Landour, Mussoorie. In 1927, at the age of 12, she made the decision to dedicate her life fully to God. In 1937, at the age of 22, she settled it in her mind that she would spend the rest of her life serving God and went to Suwait and did missionary work in the village. On April 2, 1938 she motored from India to Glasgow, Scotland and finally arrived around June 18th. She attended Seminary in Scotland. She remained there through WWII. While the war raged and she studied, she cared for 12 children who had been orphaned because their parents were bombed out. She stayed until 1945 and many days, did not have enough to eat or to feed the children. In 1945, She came to America and lived in Waukeshaw and stayed 8 months. She spent time canvasing in Cincinatti, OH. In 1946 she went to Brownsville, TX to care for 50 Mexican children at a daycare. She stayed there 1 year and then traveled to Mexico for 3 weeks to teach. From Mexico, she went to Providence, RI where she worked for 2 years in the house cooking and cleaning for the men who canvassed. In 1948, after the British left, she returned to India with her sister Marjorie. The language had changed from Arabic to Hindi which meant she had to spend 2 years learning Hindi at a language school in Misoouri. Her teachers were mostly Hindu and very few were Christian. While there, she taught a Bible class for the men who worked on the compound. They had Sunday School and did plays. In 1950 she returned to Suwait and worked in the hospital helping Ms. Sealock. 1963 was her first furlough at which time she chose to come to Denver CO and attend nurses training to become an LPN. While in Denver, as she was studying, she worked at Denver General Hospital. Her furlough lasted 3 and one half years. She returned to India in 1966 and preached, had Sunday School and led prayer meetings every morning at the hospital. In the Spring of 1969 she took a 1 year furlough and came back to the US and visited family. She returned to India in 1970 and studied midwifery at a Presbyterian Mission in Satacha. In 1972, after passing the exam with honors, she returned to Suwait and worked as the person in charge of the Suwait Hospital. While there, she delivered many sick babies and helped multitudes of sick people. She retired from Indian missionary work in 1984 and moved to Lake Geneva, WI where she became an American missionary. She resided and served in the retirement home. She befriended people in local businesses and witnessed to people in the streets. During that time, she did a little traveling with her sister Marjorie and her husband, LeRoy. In September of 2001 she moved to an apartment where she continued her mission work. She befriended and witnessed to everyone she could in the apartment. Her niece and children came to visit every year. In November of 2013, at the age of 98, her niece moved her down to Texas after experiencing some health problems. She lived in her niece's home for 6 months before moving to an assisted living apartment where she, of course, continued her mission work of witnessing for Jesus. She celebrated her 99th birthday there with her family and her new friends. In June of 2015, at the age of 99 1/2, her health deteriorated to the point where she needed 24 hour nursing care and she moved into Conroe Healthcare Center. During her stay, she celebrated her 100th birthday in September 2015 and 101st in September 2016. For the last 15 months of her life in Conroe Healthcare Center, she told everyone who would listen, about Jesus. It was only in the last 3 weeks, she was unable to speak, but her work here on earth was clearly finished. What a inspiration Alice is to all, and because of her faithfulness to her master, countless people from all walks of life will be celebrating with her in heaven for all eternity. Arrangements with Steinke Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Lake Geneva. Interment East Dundee Cemetery, Dundee, Il.
