Samuel Haddix lived in Barbour County, West Virginia near Phillipi. According to the publication The History of Barbour County by Hu Maxwell, Samuel Haddix served both as County Assessor and as a Constable, which is a person who had limited power as an officer of the peace, having police and minor judicial functions, usually in a small town, rural district. It was an elected office and he served as Constable in 1843. He served as County Assessor in 1867.

Census records reveal he and his wife, Sarah Jane (Polling) Haddix followed sons Phillip and Winfield Scott to Nebraska, in the 1880's, and died probably on his ranch in 1892 in Sherman County, Nebraska.
