Rutherford Co., NCMy 4th greatfather and 4th greatmother, Dugger [Duggar] and Sarah Prince Freeman, are buried in the old Duggar Freeman Family Cemetery located on a section of his original land. The Cemetery is now in a cow pasture on Paul Mayse's place on Freeman Road (SR 1559) on the right side about eight tenths of a mile from where it intersects Whiteside Road (SR 1538). The cemetery is located almost directly across the road from the old William Alonzo Wilson home place in the Wilson Church (School) section. There were apparently several graves in the burial ground but most are unmarked. The three dates of greatest interest are marked on a single stone, a single obelisk with inscriptions on three sides. Apparently this stone was erected at the time of Edward Freeman's death and many years after that of his parents deaths. The monument has the following inscriptions: (1) Duggar Freeman 1756 - 1831), (2) Sarah wife of D. Freeman (1757 - 1842 ) and Edward Freeman ( 1802 - 1883 ). It is known that at least some of these dates are in error and it is believed they were probably best guesses of some family member at the death of Edward. I believe the more correct dates should be: Duggar b. c1765 - d. 1824; Sarah b. c1770 - d. 1843; and Edward b. 1802 - d. 1883.

The above was the description I wrote many years ago after visiting the cemetery, however I hear from a recent visitor that the cemetery has completely desapeared. I hope this is not the case, but could be as the cemetery was in an open pasture with cattle free to move over the cemetery.

A thank you to Miles Philbeck, Bulletin Editor for The Genealogical Society Of Old Tryon County for giving us permission to use this survey. This cemetery is located near McCaslins Branch in the Wilson Baptist Church Section. There are unmarked graves in the cemetery, and the marked graves are recorded below. Some of the dates, as noted, are almost illegible, although unusual efforts have been taken to decipher them. Also some of the dates are on the marker of Duggar and Sarah are questionable.

Guffy, Wm. ?. May 1811? November 1841? Dates guessed.

Gravesite Details

Many years ago when I visited the Duggar Freeman Cemetery, it was in very poor condition. The Cemetery was in a cow pasture with no fencing and the cows were free to move in the cemetery and apparently they knocked down the markers multipal times.
