Major George R. Bunch (retired), 84, former Deming resident, passed away Thursday December 7, 2006, after a lengthy illness.
A graveside service with full military honors will be held Tuesday December 19, 2006 at 10 o'clock in the morning at Mountain View Cemetery with Rev. Frank Koessel, Pastor of Redeemer Lutheran Church officiating. As were his wishes, cremation will take place.

George was born in Hermiston, Oregon to Robert and Germain Bunch. When he was young, George used to hoe huckleberries for $1 a day. He left school to go work in construction for $1 and hour in the Naval Reserves and enlisted in 1941. He also served in the Army and Air Force. He did his basic training in Fort Dix, Louisiana. He fought over seas in many battles, including, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Amo, Algeria, French Morocco, Tunisian, Northern Apennines, PO Valley, North Africa, and Sicily. George drove tanks, was stationed on 5 different ships, drove landing crafts onto the beaches and was wounded at Angio Beach. He was decorated with the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was also recipient of the Purple Heart.

George loved to fish and hunt. He also liked to travel in his motor home around the United States with Lorraine.
George was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Disabled American Veterans, Paralyzed Disabled Veterans, V.F.W., American Legion, Odd Fellows and the Elks.

Survivors include, step-sons, Gerald, Lamar and James Ripke of California; five grandchildren, David, Erik, Heather, April and Scott; a special niece, Denise Tristano, along with numerous nieces, nephews as well as a special neighbor, Patti Salesses. His parents, one brother, first wife Evelyn and just recently his wife of 13 years, Lorraine, preceded him in death.
