John was the son of Josiah Hartwell and Bethia Wood of Littleton, Mass. He was married there on 24 Aug 1772 to Mary DIX, the daughter of Jonathan Dix and Sarah Shattuck of Littleton. John and Mary apparently lived in the house of his father, which is still standing today. It is surprising that grave markers have not been found for this couple; the History of Middlesex County, Massachusetts says they lived and died under an elm tree that Mary planted. They had nine children, born in Littleton from 1773 to 1790.
