Mrs Sarah E Blake, 60, passed away at her home, six miles south of Elkhart at 3 o’clock Sunday morning, after an illness caused by heart disease. She had been a resident of that community most of her life.

A son, Lee Blake, was to have gone with the quota of drafted men which left Monday morning, but because of the death of his mother, his departure has been deferred for a few days. Before her death, Mrs Blake told her attending physician that she was willing that her boy should go; that she was worried, but that it was alright for him to serve his country.

Mrs Blake was born on a farm on the Goshen road, which is now included in the city limits on November 15, 1857.

She was married to John Blake in 1878.

For a short time they lived in Noble county, but for the last 33 years she had lived on a farm, where she passed away.

Her husband died 18 years ago. Since that time she had devoted herself to the care of her eight children. Friends tell of her optimistic spirit, and of her unceasing care in the upbringing of her family.

She was an early student of Elkhart high school, but because of the removal of her family from the vicinity three months before the time for the graduation of her class, she did not receive her diploma.

Mrs Blake is survived by the following children: Mrs John (Eunice) Wolkins of near Union, Mich, Mrs M F (Sarah) Waterman, of just south of Elkhart, Jay Blake of 528 Garfield avenue, Miss Margaret Blake, a teacher at Fifth Ward school, Lee Blake, John Ray Blake, Miss Mary Louise Blake, and Miss Ennis Clare Blake, teachers in the township schools, all at home; five grandchildren; a sister, Miss Margaret Wilson of 215 West Franklin street, who is an instructor in the English department of the high school, and a brother, J F Kaufman, of Davenport, Iowa.

The funeral services were held at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon.

Miss Margaret S Wilson, one of the best known school teachers in Elkhart county, and who for three years had been head of the schools at Middlebury, died at the Elkhart General Hospital at 2:30 o’clock last Thursday afternoon.

Miss Wilson was stricken with Influenza four weeks ago and had been bedfast since that time at the home of Mrs Fred Nixon in Middlebury. The complications affected her heart. She had been taken to the hospital on Wednesday.

Miss Wilson, who was graduated from the Elkhart High school in 1886, began her career as a teacher in the city schools following a year and had devoted that remainder of her life to that calling, except during a brief period when her health failed.

In addition to being an energetic member of her chosen profession, she was an ardent worker in the Methodist church, and devotedly exerted herself in behalf of such movements as the church espoused. She was particularly active in measures to promote temperance and for the last decade had given much time and effort to the society for the prevention of tuberculosis.

For years Miss Wilson was the sole support of her aged mother, who died some years ago, and in the meantime she educated three daughters of a sister, Mrs Sarah Blake now deceased. These nieces were Inis, Margaret, and Mary Blake, all now living in Idaho. There are one or more nephews living near Wakarusa, and two married nieces whose residence is unknown to Elkhart friends.
