Hazel Lucille (Wall) Maharry, the eldest daughter of Orville and Sadie (Shafer) Wall, was born on July 8, 1921. She attended rural school and graduated with the 1938 class of Clearfield, Iowa. On July 14, 1939, she was united in marriage with Gerald (Jerry) Maharry at the Wall farm. They were privileged to share 77 years together. Their marriage was blessed with three sons: Randall, Roger and Kirk.

Jerry and Hazel raised their family on a farm north of Clearfield. They loved to follow the boys in sporting events with Hazel meticulously keeping score books for their sons’ baseball teams. As fans of both adventure and the Iowa Hawkeyes, they rode the California Zephyr with the boys to two Rose Bowl games. Rocky Mountain National Park near Estes Park, Colorado was a beloved annual family vacation which continues to be a favorite destination for the whole family to this day.

In 1963, the Clearfield Lions started the Shuttle Bus Service at the Iowa State Fair. Jerry and Hazel worked and camped at the fair with the Lions for over 40 years.
In 1975, they started traveling all over the United States in their RV. They discovered Yuma, Arizona and spent winters there for 35 years.

Hazel was a member of Lenox United Methodist Church and a past Matron of Eastern Star. She loved to play bridge and other card games.

Left to cherish Hazel’s memory are her husband Gerald; three sons: Randall and wife Janet of Estes Park, Roger and wife Jeanne of Ames, Kirk and wife Diana of Lenox; 11 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; a sister Luella Wilson of Mt. Ayr; along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

Preceding Hazel in death were her parents Orville and Sadie Wall, brother Richard, and grandson Jeremy.
