The deceased was born in the State of Maine, on the 22d day of Feb. 1836. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1862, and served over three years, being honorably discharged in 1865. He came to Minnesota in the fall of 1872, and made his home with his brother, Dr. S.B.Umphrey, of Cordova, until his death. He was one of those rare persons who are able to attend to their own business, and who allow all others to do the same.
He was visiting at the home of his niece, Mrs. Stella Richardson of Kasota, at the time he was stricken with his fatal illness. The G.A.R. of Kasota, assisted by the citizens of that place, did all that loving, Faithful hearts could suggest and kind, willing hands could execute, to restore him to health, but all was of no avail; after five days of suffering he passed away. His remains were kindly prepared for burial by the friends at Kasota and brought to Cordova for interment. The funeral was held from the U. B. church at Cordova, which was filled to its utmost capacity. After a sermon from Ps. 144 3, by the pastor, Rev. E.J. Reed, the remains were taken in charge by the G.A.R. and Sons of Veterans of Cordova, and carried to the beautiful cemetery where they were laid to rest. Another soldier has fallen. One by one they are passing away..
