WINNEBAGO, Neb. -- Mary L. White, 59, of Winnebago died Tuesday, May 3, 2011, at a Sioux City hospital. Services were held at the Ho-Chunk Community Center in Winnebago. Burial took place at Winnebago. Arrangements were under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service and the Santee Nation Wake and Burial Association. Mary (Wambdi Duta Win) was born July 9, 1951, in Winnebago, the daughter of William and Maxine (Saul) Wabasha. She graduated from high school in Winnebago, then attended the United Tribes Technical College in Bismarck, N.D. She graduated from the Little Priest Tribal College in Winnebago. Mary was a member of the Casey CSSP Alliance for Racial Equality in Child Welfare, the Community Initiative for Native Children and Families, and was a pipe carrier Canupa for her family, due to her strong belief in Native American culture. Mary is survived by her husband, Melvin; three sons, Larry Starr, Gary Starr and Jonathan Starr; six daughters, Dawn Starr, Jewell Starr, Chelsey Morales, Maxine Rice, Alysia Rice and Ramona White; three brothers, Billy Wabasha, Bobby Wabasha, and Elroy Wabasha; three sisters Carol Bearshield, Brenda Wabasha and Theresa Wabasha; 49 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her son, Allen Starr; two brothers Dennis and Gary Wabasha; and one granddaughter, Larrissa Starr. (WIN; Saturday, May 28, 2011; Pg. 7)
