GAIL DANKERT KNAPP

Gail Dankert Knapp died peacefully November 4, 2004 in Davis, California after a long illness.
She was proud to have been a successfull secretary, first for Roosevelt's Emergency Relief Administration, then for Michigan Civil Service Commission, for the Louisville and Nashville Railroad and, finally in the History Department of Central Michigan University for over twenty years.
She was born on April 14, 1915 in Norwegian Tabitha Hospital, Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Frank Dankert of Chicago and Sadie Dillman Dankert of Bangor, Michigan. An avid family genealogist and amateur historian, she liked especially to recall that she had sat on the knee of a man who was born when Andrew Jackson was President -- her grandfather, Adam Dillman. Her family moved frequently when she was a child, bringing her finally back to southwestern Michigan where her mother's family lived. She graduated as Valedictorian in a class of nineteen from Hartford High School in 1932. Certified by the Royal Typewriter Company, she began her life-long dedication to making offices run smoothly and efficiently by working for the Emergency Relief Administration. In the depths of the Depression, she supported her mother and siblings on the $60 a month salary.
She moved to Lansing in 1937 to work for the new Michigan Civil Service Commission and there in 1941 she met Austin Knapp of Clare, Michigan. They were married in 1942 and remained devoted to each other for sixty two years. In 1946 they moved to Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, where Austin had a position at Central Michigan University, there she made life-long friends among faculty and "faculty dames", as well as managing the History Department.
She was a loving mother who always sought the best for her children. She is survived by her husband, two sons, Robert C. of Oakland, California and Charles W. of Carson City, Nevada; younger sister, Carol Kime of Battle Creek, Michigan; younger brother, Roger Dankert of Aurora, Colorado; two grandchildren, Abigail Knapp Cruz and Hannah Mary Knapp; and also five nieces and nephews.
An avid reader all her life, her books were only slightly less dear to her than her family. She instilled in her children and her nieces a love of reading, one of her greatest gifts. After a brief family service, her remains will be laid to rest in Cherry Grove Cemetery, Clare, Michigan.
