He gained much notoriety many years ago by firing a salute near the White House Grounds in the dead of night in celebration of Gen John A Logan's election to the Senate.
He was born in New York sixty one years ago. He spent his early life on his father's farm in North Dakota, and came to Washington to accept a position as head of Inspectors in the War Department. .. It was while in command of the battery that he became conspicuous as the man who awoke President Cleveland from his slumbers by firing the cannon in the rear of the White House.
He is survived by a widow and five children, three daughters and two sons.
