Born Feb 8, 1922 in either the Hayhurst house or the ‘Homestead’ south of Toonerville. Grandpa and the family took a trip back to Arkansas to visit his Grandpa Jim Binam when Carl was about 13 years old. They made the trip by car. Carl attended the Hughes school that was being taught by Mrs. Blair whose husband owned one of the businesses in Toonerville. The Hughes school was about 3 miles east and a little south of the rock house. He went there for 7 years when they had to close the school since there were only 3 kids left. He did his last year at the ‘Nelson’ school -- teacher Mrs. Marcia Walker, two Nelson kids, and Carl. The Nelson school was a mile east and a little south. Carl stayed with the family when they moved into Las Animas in 1936. He attended high school there and graduated in 1940. Shortly after graduation, he joined the Army and was sent to Lowry AFB in Denver for basic training. From there he was assigned to Will Rodgers Field in Oklahoma and then went on overseas for the 2nd World War. He traveled around the theater a lot during the war seeing duty in places such as Scotland, Tunisia, and all over North Africa. He returned to the states and again was moved around a lot. He was at Santa Monica, Fort Logan, Lincoln, El Paso, and San Bernardino. He was discharged from the Army in 1945. Carl married Opal Ollie Cobb Wilson on May 13, 1945. (Opal was born in Oklahoma on June 3, 1914). They adopted two children: one girl, Sandra Lee Binam born May 18, 1945, and one boy, Lowell Dean Binam born May 18, 1946. He and Opal lived in San Bernardino for a time running a chicken business until he re-enlisted in the Army in 1947. He worked as a flight line mechanic and aircraft ground crewman in the Army Air Corps. He was sent to Fairbanks, Alaska in 1947 to work on P-80 Shooting Stars. They sent him back to March Field, CA where he was discharged in 1950. He took a civil service job at Norton AFB, CA until 1960 when he and the family moved to Santa Maria and a job at Vandenberg AFB, CA. He retired from the Civil Service in August 1978.
