He was born in Alexandria, Egypt; Left an orphan, Henry was taken to America by an uncle, who settled at North Adams, Mass. After a year at the United States Military Academy at West Point, Mowbray went to Paris and entered the atelier of Leon Bonnat.

His first major presentation painting, "Aladdin", brought him to great public notice.

In 1891, Mowbray was made a full member of the National Academy of Design.

Subsequently Henry Mowbray was best known for his decorative work, especially:

"The Transmission of the Law"
Appellate Court House Ceiling for the residence of F. W. Vanderbilt.

"The ceiling and walls of the library of the University Cluball in NYC."
(This last was executed in Rome, where he was made director of the American Academy in 1903.)

Mowbray was a 1901 instructor at the Art Students League of New York.

"Henry Siddons Mowbray was a gifted, Victorian era artist."
