Obituary for Janice Patrick Stillman

On the morning of September 12, 2016, Janice Patrick Stillman of Roper, NC, passed from her earthly home to her heavenly home, surrounded by her family members.

Janice was preceded in death by her husband, John Stillman; father, Raymond Patrick; mother, Willie Patrick; sister, Carolyn Frazier and brother-in-law, Robert Spruill. Beloved family members who remain include her sister, Joyce Spruill of Roper, NC; daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Hal Davis of Goldsboro, NC; son and daughter-in-law, John and Gretta Stillman of Newton, NC; daughter and son-in-law, Angie and Jay Swain of Fuquay-Varina, NC; daughter, Rev. Sandy Stillman-Alvin of Raleigh, NC; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Janice served her church and larger community as a choir director, Sunday School teacher, music minister and teacher since the age of ten when she first played piano for the congregation of Oak Grove Baptist Church. Other congregations served include New Covenant Baptist Church and most recently, Albemarle Baptist Church.

Janice's music ministry, Jan S. Ministries, served many beyond local congregations through her performances and recordings of original Christian worship music. Additionally, she served as a beloved mentor and teacher of piano, voice and guitar to numerous students in the Washington, Tyrrell and Chowan County region.

The Stillman family will gather with loved ones on Thursday, September 15, 2016 at Piney Grove Baptist Church, Roper, NC. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. followed by a service of remembrance and celebration at noon.

Graveside services will be held after the funeral where Janice will be laid to rest beside her husband, John, in the family's cemetery, Sahara, on the Pea Ridge Road in Roper, NC.

Janice Patrick Stillman who shortened her byline to JanS when in 1992 she formedJanS Ministries, was born and reared in sound country just at the south end ofthe Albemarle Sound Bridge in the Pea Ridge section of Washington County, North Carolina. At ten she emerged as a self-taught Church Pianist. Later, after receiving a ten-year certificate of study for piano, rearing four children with husband John R. Stillman, she reemerged as a published singer/songwriter beginning with "The Mountains Will Melt," on Eddie Crook Label, 1995 "God is Great," on Daystar Label, 1996 "The Blood Still Cries Out," on 3 R 1 Label, 1997 and "Angels,"on Vision Quest Label, 1998 and more.A volunteer for North Carolina Writers' Network, JanS teaches song writing to the inmates in Womens' Prison in Raleigh, North Carolina where, with the help of Vision Quest, she produced in part a CD of Christmas songs written and sung by inmates. The1998nationally released CD also contained songs by stars such as Charlie Louvin, and The Hoppers. In addition, JanS has taught piano, guitar, and voice since 1989. During the same time, the singer/songwriter has performed from South Carolina to Pennsylvania, helped found the New Covenant Baptist Church at Pea Ridge, directed choir, and won awards for her songs and for her performances.
