Joseph Brainerd of East Haddam, Middlesex Co., Conn.; m., Feb. 13, 1812, Sophia Smith, dau. of Jeremiah and Temperance (Comstock) Smith, of East Haddam, Conn. He served as school committee and as justice of the peace in 1826. He was treasurer, secretary, director, agent, and a stockholder in the Smith Manufacturing Co., Moodus, East Haddam. He was Ensign in the 25th Regt., 7th Brigade. After the insolvency of the company, he moved to Philadelphia, Pa. Mr. Joseph Brainerd d. Dec. 8, 1843 or 1844, in that place and was buried there. His widow returned to East Haddam for the remainder of her days. Mrs. Sophia (Smith) Brainerd died Nov. 19, 1845, ae. 52 yrs., 6 mos., 6 ds., and was buried in the Cemetery on Town Hill.
