Alvin Ray Henderson, age 77 of Lewistown, Missouri passed away Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at his home in Lewistown, Missouri.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 17, 2016 at the Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Kirksville, Missouri. Visitation Friday, September 16, 2016 with family greeting friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. With burial in the Mt. Tabor Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery near Hurdland in Knox County, Missouri.

Alvin Ray Henderson, 77 of Lewistown, Missouri passed away Wednesday, September 14, 2016 in his home with his family, under the care of Hospice.

Born December 11, 1938 in Madison County in the beautiful mountains of western North Caroline to William “Burlin” and Mandy (Payne) Henderson. He lived most of his childhood in Buncombe County, NC and graduated from North Buncombe High in the “Class of 1957.”

Alvin immediately left for basic training with the United States Air Force in San Antonio, TX. After basics he served four years active duty at the 790th Air Force Radar Squadron just north of Kirksville, Missouri. That was followed by four years of inactive duty. While at the 790th he meet his bride! Alvin married Bonnie June Spencer on June 20, 1959 in Kirksville, Adair County, MO. They celebrated 57 years of marriage in June. Alvin attended classes at Northeast Missouri State University. Alvin and Bonnie were farmers in Adair, Sullivan, Grundy, Schuyler and Knox Counties in northeast Missouri.

Alvin was MFA Plant Foods manager in the early 1970’s. He was elected Presiding Commissioner of Adair County in 1986. There were many bridges built while he held that office and it was his favorite job ever. It was his passion! He served on the PIC Council, NEMO Health Council and Missouri Association of Counties board.

On October 26, 1958 Alvin became a member of the Mount Tabor Primitive Baptist Church. He served as moderator many years.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Bonnie of the home; two sons, Kevin Ray (Terri Lynne), Darin Hal (Donna Kay); daughter, Leslie Ann (Chris) Lodahl; eight grandchildren, Spencer Elizabeth, Mandy Kay, Jason Ray, Candie June, Thomas Hal, Emily Ann, C.J. and Erin James; one great granddaughter, Marley Rose; one sister, Carol (Ken) of Georgia. Also left to share the memory of Alvin are his sisters and brothers-in-law by marriage, Beverly and Ronnie Talbert, Charlotte and David Parrish, Patty and Alan Thrasher, Pam and Kent Stokes and Marsha and Brian Harp.

Visitation will be Friday, September 16, 2016 with the family greeting friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home.
