FALLING MARBLE KILLS

A. J. HEANEY DIES WHEN STRUCK BY SLAB

Workman on New St. Mary's Hospital Leaves Wife and Six Children

A. J. Heaney, 48, a helper on a truck owned by R. B. Henderson, 811 Congress, was killed almost instantly this morning about 10 o'clock, when several heavy slabs of marble slipped from the bed of the truck on which Heaney was riding, striking him on the head. The accident occurred in the rear of the new St. Mary's hospital, at Fifteenth and State, only a few feet from where the marble was to be unloaded. Heaney suffered a severe concussion and died as he was being rushed to the old St. Mary's hospital.

According to workmen who immediately went to the scene of the accident, Heaney was standing alongside the marble slabs, helping to brace them, when the load slipped, carrying Heaney to the ground and striking him on the side of the head. Workmen estimated that approximately 1-1/2 tons of marble slipped from the load.

Jim Phillips was the driver of the truck and R. B. Henderson, owner of the truck, had been riding on the truck but had dismounted to pick a place to unload.

Heaney lived at 1217 West and leaves a wife and six children ranging from 5 to 15 years old.

Mr. Heaney was born March 17, 1879, at Creston, Iowa, and came to Kansas in 1890. Mr. Heaney attended the Teachers College from 1905 to 1907 and came back to school again in 1911. He was granted a life certificate from the Teachers College. Mr. Heaney also worked for several years in a bank in Colorado. The family returned to Emporia several years ago.

Mr. Heaney was married to Miss Anna Biggs, June 2, 1912, at Healy, Kansas. Mrs. Heaney and six young children survive. They are: Emily Rosalie, 15; Roland Cornell, 14; Eleanor Florence, 12; Margaret Lucile, 10; Alice Fern, 7; and Henrietta Christine, 5. Mr. Heaney also is survived by two brothers, Charles F. Heaney, Towner, Colo., and John T. Heaney, of Denver, Colo.

Mr. Heaney was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge.

The body will be taken to Healy for interment. No other funeral arrangements have been made.
