Patricia J. Pierce, 94, of Brookings, passed away Thursday, September 1, 2016 at the United Living Community, in Brookings. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Tuesday, September, 6, 2016 at First Lutheran Church in Brookings. Visitation will be from 9:30 am to 10:30 am Tuesday at the Church. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Patricia Jeanne Pierce was born in Minneapolis, MN, on February 20, 1922, the daughter of John and Florence (Rude) Noethe. She moved to Brookings, SD, at the age of 2 with her mother and older brother. Patricia grew up in a home on Medary Avenue with her maternal grandparents, who owned and operated Rude’s furniture store and mortuary. She had an early appreciation for music by listening to her mother sing and her aunt play piano.

Patricia performed on cello and sang in the State College choir while earning a degree in history. Patricia also met her future husband, Ellis Pierce, while on the SDSC campus. Upon graduation in 1950, Patricia taught in Volga for one year before moving with her husband to Ithaca, New York.

Patricia continued playing her cello while Ellis taught at Cornell. She was not only a performer of music, but an avid consumer of music as well. Ellis and Patricia traveled extensively throughout Europe until Ellis’ passing at the age of 56. Pat treasured the countless concerts she attended during these travels. She also collected memorabilia from all over the world. These items she would cherish later in life.

Though Patricia stopped playing the cello in 2001, her love for music continued after moving back to Brookings in 2004. She faithfully attended musical performances at South Dakota State and was known to a decades-worth of music students for her words of encouragement. Patricia expressed it beautifully, “Music is a little bit of heaven on earth. It can just heal all kinds of wounds.”

Pat was a generous supporter of the SDSU Music Department, providing for the purchase of high-quality pianos, endowing scholarships for students, and creating the Patricia Noethe Pierce Artist-in-Residence – the latter of which affords faculty in the program to pursue excellence in scholarly and creative activity.

Patricia is survived by two nephews, Robert (Cathy) Noethe of Gaithersburg, MD, and Robert Pierce, of Onida, SD; her second cousin, Alfred (Deanna) Rude, of Brookings; and many dear friends in Brookings, Ithaca, NY, and at South Dakota State University and Cornell University.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ellis; and brother, John Noethe.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church or to the SDSU Foundation FBO the Department of Music.
