William Burwell Jones passed away on Wednesday, July 6th, at his care home in Georgetown, Texas. He was 87.

His memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 16th at 2 pm at First United Methodist Church in Georgetown.

Bill was born in Meridian, Mississippi, to George Hawkins Jones and Jessie Ireta Cox Jones on November 14, 1928.

His family moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where he attended West End High School. He graduated from Millsaps College of Jackson, Mississippi, in 1950. He obtained a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Emory University of Atlanta, Georgia, in 1953, where he met his wife, Carol G. Dean.

The couple travelled to Santiago, Chile, where they served five years as Methodist missionaries. They became fluent in Spanish and travelled to many parts of South America. Bill developed a deep love of Latin American culture and history, which became the foundation for his later teaching career.

When they returned to the United States, Bill supported his family by preaching in small Methodist churches while he worked on his Ph.D. as a Rockefeller Scholar at Vanderbilt University of Nashville, Tennessee. His degree was awarded in 1965, the same year he came to Southwestern University in Georgetown.

He served in many roles during his long career there, including Lucy King Brown Chair of the Department of History and Government, Administrative Vice President, Provost, and Executive Vice President. He retired in 2000, and wrote To Survive and Excel: The Story of Southwestern University 1840-2000 from his home.

Bill is survived by his wife, Carol, and their four children: Rebeca Jones, Debora Jones Acevedo, Judith Jones, and Dean Jones. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church: Bill Jones Scholarship Fund; First United Methodist Church: Getsemani Community Center; or The Caring Place in Georgetown.
